Downtown Project “Going Black”

TLCD Architecture’s downtown Santa Rosa Luther Burbank Savings Headquarters Branch project is beginning to change colors, going from bright yellow to black. The “black’ is a spray-applied waterproof membrane, the first installation step of an innovative building exterior referred to as a “rear-ventilated rainscreen” system. The black waterproof membrane will keep the building watertight.

In the next few weeks black aluminum channels will be installed over this membrane, then overlaid with stunning wood veneered panels. The panels will be attached to the aluminum from behind, with no visible fasteners. Since the waterproof membrane will keep the building dry, these panels serve a function that is strictly aesthetic. The space between the waterproof membrane is “ventilated” and is open at the top, bottom, and at panel joints. In the case of this project, the freedom to design exterior panels with open joints and without any visible means of attachment allows for a precise, clean aesthetic.

TLCD “Hydrating” Squad Works the Human Race

TLCD Architecture is thrilled to be a regular sponsor and participant in Sonoma County’s annual Human Race. As the largest event of it’s kind in the United States, the Human Race is a great way to support local charities and non-profits. On Saturday, May 5th, the TLCD “hydrating” squad (Suzanne, Bill, Jaime and Marina) passed out water and cheered on the runners and walkers as they passed the last marker for the 10k event!

DeTurk Round Barn Receives Two Awards in Single Day!

On Tuesday, May 1st TLCD Architecture’s DeTurk Round Barn received two prestigious design awards.  At the City of Santa Rosa’s afternoon city council meeting a California Parks and Recreation Society representative presented its annual facility award to the City and TLCD Architecture.  Later that same evening the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) presented an Award of Merit in the Excellence in Engineering Awards program to MKM Structural Engineers.

Built in 1891 for a prized racehorse, the DeTurk Round Barn is one of only two true round barns remaining in California and is listed on both the state and federal registries of historic places. After decades of use as a city corporation yard, this unique adaptive reuse project seismically upgraded and restored the building to its new life as a Community Center. During construction the entire barn was raised on hydraulic lifts for several months to allow construction of concrete foundations and a floor slab. In order to preserve the historic integrity of the barn, all interior wood framing was left exposed; no insulation or interior finishes were added. Existing redwood posts or beams that could not be reused, were re-milled into paneling at the stairwells.

The renovated building features a stunning, circular ground floor and open mezzanine totaling more than 7,500 square feet. The space accommodates weddings, receptions, parties, meetings and other special events. A catering kitchen, restrooms, and elevator were added, along with a high-tech audio-visual system featuring multiple projectors and a curved 18–foot screen. A radiant floor slab provides heat to the un-insulated historic building, and a 24-foot diameter overhead fan provides air circulation.

Historic DeTurk Round Barn Features Ultra Modern Fan

How do you cool a historic round barn built in 1891 without extensive air conditioning systems? With a modern, high efficiency 24 foot diameter fan of course! Big Ass Fans features the DeTurk Round Barn in it’s current “Donkey Tales” newsletter.

The City of Santa Rosa Recreation, Parks and Community Services Department worked with TLCD Architecture to lovingly renovate the DeTurk Round Barn, one of only two true round barns remaining in California.

Bridgett McGrath SMPS Volunteer of the Month!

Well deserved congratulations go out to TLCD’s Marketing Specialist, Bridgett McGrath, who was named the SMPS “Volunteer of the Month” for March. Bridgett has been very involved with the Society for Marketing Professional Services San Francisco Chapter, and has played a pivotal role in the Programs Committee and several successful events. She will be recognized at this week’s Meet the Press Event on Thursday, March 15th. Way to go Bridgett!

Thoughts about the SSU Economic Outlook Conference

Jason Brabo and I attended the 2012 Sonoma State University Economic Outlook Conference on February 23, a joint collaboration between SSU and the North Bay Business Journal. This year’s event provided regional economic analysis and forecast information from Dr. Robert Eyler of Sonoma State University, as well as a candid discussion of the State budget by Controller John Chiang. It comes as no surprise, that the underlying message is – slow, steady recovery nationwide, with bigger challenges for California’s economy.

With an impressive panel of speakers, we heard from SSU President Ruben Arminana, who spoke about the economic and cultural impact the Green Music Center will have on our region. As one of the top musical venues in the world, this center will be an international attractor, creating a “buzz” that will enhance the concept of cultural tourism in the north bay. Andy Berliner, CEO of Amy’s Kitchen gave an stirring talk about his company’s mission to provide healthy, convenient organic food to consumers. With roots in Sonoma County, Mr. Berliner spoke about his company’s focus on a quality work environment, employee health and it’s rapid growth into international markets.

Of particular interest, was the panel discussion with Jill Techel, Mayor for City of Napa,  Carolyn Stark, Director of the Sonoma County BEST program, and Remy Gross, Director of Technology for the Buck Institute. These panelists, representing the private and public sector, shared specific strategies for stimulating business and job growth through innovation and forward thinking. TLCD Architecture, a member of the Sonoma County BEST program, is poised to work with Carolyn Stark and other members of the program to stimulate job growth through new business opportunities in Sonoma County.

Aurora Behavioral Health Under Construction

TLCD Architecture is currently in construction administration on a 93-bed psychiatric hospital for Aurora Behavioral Health Care at the site of the former Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital on Fulton Road. Read more in today’s Press Democrat article “Bridging Mental Health Gap”.

Proud Moment for TLCD Architecture

I feel very fortunate to have attended the annual North Bay Business Journal Top Projects awards last night with Don Tomasi, Suzanne Nagorka, Kevin Teel and his wife Carolyn. This was a very special event for all of us because 2 of the 11 winning projects were Civic projects led by Mark Adams.

DeTurk Round Barn was honored in the historic renovation category, and the City of Santa Rosa’s Utilities Field Office was honored in the green/sustainable category.

Don was able to present both awards to the owners and he was very eloquent in his praise of Mark’s leadership skills, his passion and dedication to these two very diverse projects, and his ongoing focus on design excellence in the built environment. For all of us who attended, it was apparent that this was far more than just a simple awards ceremony, it was a tribute to Mark’s work and achievements.

Marc Richardson with the City of Santa Rosa Recreation and Parks department, commented on Mark’s amazing skill at leading multiple neighborhood meetings and gaining community consensus to move the renovation of the DeTurk Round Barn forward. Miles Ferris with the City of Santa Rosa’s Utilities department commended Mark for pushing them to design a building that was more than just functional. The Utilities Field Office (UFO) is a model of sustainable design and is the first commercial project approved within the City’s new Green Building Development program.

From Don’s heartfelt words, to the high praise from our clients, it was an affirmation of Mark’s work and the legacy of his projects in the North Bay. It was one of the proudest moments I’ve had with TLCD Architecture and I know Mark is smiling on us all.

TLCD Architecture Recognized for 2 Top Project Awards

The North Bay Business Journal announced it’s selection of the 2011 Top Projects in real estate that will be honored at their upcoming awards event in December. TLCD Architecture was the design architect for the Santa Rosa Utilities Field Office selected for the Green Category, as well as the DeTurk Round Barn selected for the Historic Renovation category.

“We’re excited about this recognition because these projects represent the City of Santa Rosa’s commitment to the quality of the built environment”, said Mark Adams who oversees TLCD’s Civic practice.
