Napa Health & Human Services Agency Tours Steelcase Showroom

TLCD Architecture was recently selected to provide programming and master planning services for the redevelopment of the Napa County Health and Human Services Agency campus in Napa, California. The master plan will bring together a comprehensive range of services including social, mental health, public health, and alcohol and drug treatment – with the goal of making them more accessible and effective for Napa County residents.

Beginning in September of 2011, TLCD’s project team conducted a series of visioning sessions with key stakeholder groups from the County of Napa. In addition to early sessions to evaluate the overall building program and establish project goals, the team utilized “touring” as a means to evaluate other facilities and see the latest in workplace innovation.

In December, Steelcase and Northern California dealer, One Workplace hosted the HHSA management team at their San Francisco showroom and conference center for a visioning session that explored new workplace planning strategies. By experiencing a variety of furniture solutions, the group was able to create a vision for a more efficient and effective work environment. It was gratifying to watch the client group as they experienced first-hand the various options for open work areas. In fact one of the senior administrators commented that she saw for the first time how good workplace design encourages collaboration.

3D Printing comes to TLCD

Our primary software and support source, Ideate Inc., has been asking us to have one of our Revit models printed on a 3D printer for some time, in order to get a first hand “feel” for the process. An opportunity recently came about, and we took them up on their kind offer.

We used the Mendocino Transit Authority project, and with minimal processing, sent the virtual building to LGM Architectural Visualization, http://www.lgmmodel.com/, for the work. The results are outstanding, and we are looking for the next opportunity to utilize this incredible tool.

SMPS Mixer at TLCD’s Office

Last night TLCD Architecture hosted a mixer for the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) North Bay and San Francisco Chapters.  The event provided an opportunity for Marketing and Business Development professionals within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry to network with one another and learn about what SMPS has to offer.

Throughout the last year, the SMPS North Bay Chapter organized a number of professional enrichment and educational events and I have found each of them to be extremely engaging and valuable.  It was great to share my experiences with other members and their guests.

TLCD Named One of the Healthiest Companies in North Bay!

The team at TLCD Architecture believes in staying healthy both during and after hours. From hiking, biking and running to walking, yoga and gardening, its all about moving and staying active. To encourage healthy workplace practices, we launched the TLCD Fit Force 3 years ago. Supported by our management team, the Fit Force has been behind such activities as a health faire, a winter food cook-off, bowling tournaments, kayaking, food drives, a smoothie contest and an entire week of special events to honor Earth Week!

The opportunity to be part of the inaugural award as one of the “Healthiest Companies in the North Bay” by the North Bay Business Journal is very exciting and underscores TLCD’s commitment to bringing healthy food choices, exercise and community involvement to the workplace.

Reflections on the Monterey Design Conference

Over the weekend, eight members of TLCD Architecture travelled down California’s coastline to the AIACC Monterey Design Conference. As a non-architect (though somewhat of a closet arch-geek) I was thrilled to be invited to attend the conference as a TLCD representative. After a couple of days back in the office and some time absorbing and reflecting, I thought I would share a little from my experience…

The Monterey Design Conference is held every two years at the epically beautiful Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove and draws some of the most renowned architects of our time.  As a first-timer to the event, one could image that I was a bit nervous.  Like a rookie ballplayer joining a team mid-season, I walked into the main hall with the knowledge that I was amongst a group of well-established friends and colleagues who have partnered, collaborated, and competed with each other for years.  Though I was admittedly somewhat tongue-tied and star struck by the talent surrounding me, I was quickly assured and encouraged by the general camaraderie and openness amongst all of the attendees.

The list of speakers was impressive to say the least.  From Tom Kundig’s exploration into the interaction between building and landscape to Dr. Dickson Despommier’s response to global food shortages and environmental degradation through vertical farming, the key focus of the conference seemed to orbit around the larger concepts of sustainability.

But for me, listening to Jeanne Gang was the true highlight of the entire conference.  As she began to show her work, Gang intricately guided us through a complexly deep and thoughtful approach to design (it is no surprise that she was honored as a MacArthur Fellow this September).  From finding balance in urban ecology to creating a vision of communities in a postindustrial landscape, Gang realizes projects that few could even conceive possible.

Looking back on the conference, I see how it has changed and expanded my understanding of the impact of design on our world and when Monterey Design Conference 2013 comes along, count me in!

TLCD Architecture celebrated it’s first “Best Places to Work” award on Thursday, September 29th at a ceremony hosted by the North Bay Business Journal at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek in Santa Rosa. Attending from TLCD were Don Tomasi, Alan Butler, Jason Brabo, Mark Adams, Suzanne Nagorka, Janet Klain, Craig Gaevert and Marina Starkey.

The sheer number of people in attendance (over 450) is a testament to the number of companies dedicated to growing their business in the North Bay and to providing a quality workplace for their employees. TLCD Architecture Featured in DeTurk Round Barn Video

The recently completed DeTurk Round Barn for the City of Santa Rosa, is the focus of this beautifully produced video that offers vignettes by local historians, and interviews by the team responsible for the renovation of this community treasure. Don Tomasi, Mark Adams and Kevin Teel of TLCD Architecture are featured in the video and guide the viewer through the careful process to transform a derelict building into its current use as a museum and meeting venue.

How 3D Printing Will Make U.S. Self-Sufficient
